Perpetual Nomad

The term "perpetual nomad" has been flung around the travel blogging scene for a while now, but I feel like it has not been truly discussed in detail.  What is a perpetual nomad?

A perpetual nomad is a person who is never set on one location; never set for staying put

A perpetual nomad is not a new concept by far, but it is a term that is becoming more popular since the means to becoming one are more widely available.

Typical Path of a Perpetual Nomad

The perpetual nomad will often start off by traveling to interesting places, staying put for a while and then picking up and starting over again somewhere new.  The life is one full of constant adventure and, since there is the need for mobility, very little clutter.

A perpetual nomad may choose to move from place to place for many reasons.  Boredom and routine are two common factors in choosing to leave one temporary home for another.  Cost of living or work opportunities are the others.

How is it Possible to be a Perpetual Nomad?

Perpetual nomadism has been made possible by becoming one of the following:

  1. Digital Nomad - A digital nomad is a person that is able to complete work tasks from anywhere in the world via a computer and Internet. These people simple need to connect to the Web and they can easily earn a paycheck that keeps them funded and able to move on when necessary or desirable. Typical jobs include web and graphic design, freelance writing and photography, freelance SEO work or consulting.
  2. English Teacher - Teaching English around the world is a very plausible opportunity for any native speaker. Those with training in teaching (TEFL certified) have a better chance in some areas, such as Western Europe, although other areas of the world may only require a native tongue.
  3. Translator - Translating work can be completed by people fluent in another language.  Translating documents and websites or helping other travelers with tours and transport are possibilities when it comes to working as a translator around the world.
